This edition was taken from a photograph by Klaus Staek that captured the props of a performance of Joseph Beuys, V, staged in 1972 in Naples. To prepare for this performance, Beuys painted the name of a plant, vitex agnus castus, on a length of cobalt-blue ribbon. He then secured it to the back of his hat with a branch of the plant. After smearing his hand with machine grease, he lay on the floor near two stacks of square plates, created from fat and wax. He inserted bronze and iron plates into the stacks. For almost three hours, Beuys remained in this position, face down, extending his arm to stroke the copper plates with his grease-covered hand. Over time, he seemed to draw energy from the copper, which caused him to tremble.
