Francis Bacon reworked Velasquez’s “Portrait of Innocent X” to create a nightmarish vision. Here, “The Innocent” depicts the same figure in a monumental, gilded armchair. But the woman, a normal woman, not a monstrous pope, is calm and self-assured. The blue of the shirt and the round face are a tribute to Cézanne’s portraits of his wife. The red and yellow flames or tongues surround “The Innocent” without really reaching her. The woman smiles mysteriously, as if inwardly. Is she really condemned? Is she really innocent? Are we really innocent of everything? As is often the case, FranSoisT signs with his monogram FsT, followed by the date and a brushstroke. On the back, on the return of the canvas and the stretcher, is the artist’s signature.
