The brushstroke technique, which has its origins in the tradition of calligraphy, forms the basis of Kitikong Tilokwattanotai’s artistic practice.
Whether combined or layered to create the illusion of form, or left as is, the brushstroke remains a marker of the moment, in space and time, when the artist connected with the canvas through movement to express an emotion. In an abstract painting, by definition without direct reference to an object or person, the brushstroke stands on its own; it creates its own meaning.
But Tilokwattanotai transforms the brushstroke into a vector of communication where the brush becomes an extension of his body and soul. In his emotional and meditative state, Tilokwattanotai lets his sense of self fade and automation take over; the work creates itself.
In his creations, he uses lacquer, an ancestral material widespread in Crafts and Art in Asia. The long process – several weeks – of lacquering consists of the careful application of thin layers – around fifty – and successive operations of sanding and polishing
The lacquer then transforms into a texture developer for the pictorial layers and a chromatic intensifier for the pigments.
These effects refer to the depth of the work to reveal the invisible.
The brushstrokes combined with the mirror effect of the lacquer and the expressive forms that resemble calligraphy encourage the viewer to engage with the work.
The forms depicted then simply act as guides to infinite possibilities. Such meaning, linked neither to a place nor a time, stimulates our imagination.
